Luis G. Castillo obtained a degree in Civil Engineering in 1985 at the Universidad Central, Ecuador (a six-year program) and a Civil Engineering Ph.D. in 1990 at the Universidad Politécnica of Catalunya, Spain.
In his first years of career he worked in the Instituto Ecuatoriano de Recursos Hidráulicos INERHI, combining professional practice with teaching activities as Assistan Professor of Strength of Materials and Hydrodinamics-Hydraulics Laboratory at the Universidad Central of Ecuador. Later he was Awarded the distinction of Standing Advisory of Hydraulics Laboratory, having carried out several studies on physical and numerical models.
He became an Assistant Professor of Hydraulic Structures at the Universidad Alfonso X of Madrid and Castilla La Mancha of Ciudad Real. Since 2002, he has been a Titular Professor in Hydraulic Engineering at the Universidad Politécnica of Cartagena, Spain. Professor Castillo is Head of the Hydraulic Engineering Laboratory and Principal Research of the Hydr@m Group: https://www.upct.es/hidrom/
In his thirty five-year career, he has worked as a Project Director in some of the principal engineering companies of Spain, having executed over one hundred reports, studies and projects in hydrology, water resources, dams, irrigation systems and fluvial engineering.
He has been Deputy Director for 8 years of the Higher Technical School of Engineers of Roads, Channels and Ports and for 3 years Director of the Department of Civil Engineering of the UPCT. His lines of research are related to floods, spillways and energy dissipaters, dam break of conventional and mining waste, macrorroughness and hyper-concentrated flows, hydrological characterization of semi-arid zones and intake systems in ephemeral rivers.
In 1997 he made a stay at the University of Glasgow (UK), studying the floods and sediment transport. His principal research interests are in topics related to flash floods, spillways and energy dissipators, hyperconcentrated flows and intake systems in ephemeral rivers.
Since 1990, he has been a member of the International Association for Hydro-Environment Engineering and Research IAHR and he has contributed more than one hundred and eighty papers published in scientific journals and conferences proceedings. Some of its formulations on the characterization of hydrodynamic actions due to the overflow of dams have been incorporated into the Technical Manual: "Overtopping Protection for Dams" of the Bureau of Reclamation and the Federal Emergency Management Agency of the United States: https://www.fema.gov/media-library/assets/documents/97888
In 2015 was a Visiting Scholar at the University of California, Davis (USA), investigating the highly aerated and turbulent two-phase flows and sediment transport.
He is a Reviewer of Journal of Hydrology (ELSAVIER), Journal of Hydraulic Engineering (ASCE), Environmental Fluid Mechanics Journal (SPRINGER), Journal of Hydro-environment Research (ELSAVIER), Journal of Experimnental Thermal and Fluid Science (ELSEVIER), Journal of Hydroinformatics (IWA), Flow Measurement and Instrumentation Journal (ELSEVIER), Water (MDPI), Applied Science (MDPI), Sustainability (MDPI), Mountain Science (MDPI), Environmental Engineering and Management Journal (SJR), Wessex Institute of Technology (WIT), Canadian Journal of Civil Engineering (NRC) and Revista Ingeniería del Agua-RIA (IWA): https://publons.com/researcher/562946/luis-g-castillo-elsitdie/peer-review/
Since 2017 is a Scientific Associate Editor of Revista Iberoameicana del Agua-RIBAGUA (Taylor & Francis): https://www.tandfonline.com/action/journalInformation?show=editorialBoard&journalCode=trib20
From 2013 to 2017 he has been an International Advisor on Hydraulic Structures in the Electricity Corporation of Ecuador (CELEC EP).
Prof. Castillo is an Evaluator of the National Agency for Innovation and Prospective (ANEP) and National Agency for the Evaluation of Quality and Accreditation (ANECA) of the Ministry of Science and Innovation of Spain.
