An exploratory observational study was carried out using the Iberian Balance Sheet Analysis System. The economic and financial profitability ratios of a sample of 11,881 companies corresponding to National Code of Economic Activities 931 (sports activities), 323 (manufacture of sporting goods) and 4764 (retail trade of sporting goods in specialized stores) were performed. Analysis of variance allowed to compare the possible influence of size (micro, small, medium, and large enterprises) and subsector of activity (manufacturing, marketing, services) on the level of profitability of assets and capital, respectively. The study reports negative average levels of economic and financial profitability for this business community from 2005 to 2015. It has not been possible to confirm neither size or sub-sector of activity¿s influence on the observed low levels of profitability.
