© 2017 IEEE. Wireless sensor network deployments for in situ lunar surveys will be subject to a random scattering of sensors, resulting in random network connectivity and coverage. Models reflecting this property, as well as the three-dimensional terrain, lifetime, and mass constraints of the mission, are introduced. From them, an optimization problem solved with simulated annealing is defined, enabling selection of the best deployment configuration in order to characterize water distribution in the scenario recently described by Klima et al. in the Bullialdus Crater on the Moon.
