The simulation of the seismic behaviour of reinforced concrete elements by using numerical models represents a field of great interest, due to the importance of accurately knowing the effects provoked by seismic loads when acting on a reinforced concrete structure. The main objective of the present article is the adjustment of several equations to simulate the yield and ultimate behaviour of a given RC section. These equations are necessary to describe the hysteretic behaviour properly. A selection of tests has been carried out from a database of more than 1000 tests, complying with the seismic construction requirements of the main international building codes (EC-2, EC-8 and ACI-318). Thus, a select database of actual structural elements used in habitual RC buildings is obtained. The equations proposed are calibrated with that selection by using Genetic Algorithms. Some results are given and compared to the results obtained by other authors previously. © 2014 Taylor & Francis Group.
