The potential of ferroelectrics and other high-permittivity (high-k) dielectrics for such high-frequency devices is due to the field-dependent permittivity of these materials, which can be of application to frequency agile devices whose operation frequency can be tuned by a control signal. In this way, the same circuit can be reconfigured or adapted to operate at different frequencies. This offers considerable advantages for the design of reconfigurable passive and active devices, especially in terms of reduction of size, complexity, and cost of systems with multiband operation capabilities.
