Cultural heritage is a fragile, nonrenewable resource that constitutes the basic record of past human activities, and as such, it should be protected (Vecco 2010). The protection and management of cultural heritage include materials characterisation, archaeological prospecting and structural stability analysis. Regarding archaeological surveys, the full characterisation of archaeological sites using conventional techniques takes years, while drilling and excavations, which are most frequently applied in archaeological assessments, are ground disturbing. Hence, in most cases, surveying is carried out using nondestructive testing (NDT) technologies, reflecting a societal concern for the maintenance and conservation of these sites (Lin et al. 2011).
