Over the last three decades, there has been considerable interest in the use of metal matrix composites (MMCs). The worldwide MMC markets in 1999 accounted for 2500 metric tons valued at over $100M [1]. The addition of reinforcements into metallic matrix can improve specific strength, stiffness, wear, fatigue and creep properties, compared to conventional engineering materials, over a wide range of operating conditions. At the same time, there have been rapid strides in developing economically viable and attractive processing routes for these heterogeneous materials. Although initially developed for military and space applications, recent demand for MMCs led to their use in the areas of automotive and aerospace products, as well as recreational goods. In this paper, the status of the research and development in fabricating, mechanical properties and industrial applications of metal matrix composites are reviewed, with a major focus on fabrication methods and tribological applications. © 2012 by Nova Science Publishers, Inc.
