Using accounting data from a sample of 78 greenhouses of the Almería coastal area corresponding to 1996/97, a production function analysis has been performed for pepper and tomato crops. Several functional forms have been first considered, looking for the most adequate specification to explain production of both crops. Total yield, in physical (Kilograms/ha) terms, has been used as dependent variable for the estimation of a regression model, with the following independent variables: greenhouse surface, expenditure in pesticides, water, fertilisers, labour, seeds and other expenditures. A variable related to the age of some fixed assets (irrigation system, greenhouse structure) has also been included in the model. Continuing with the analysis of the economic productive structures for the two crops considered, efficiency indexes have been estimated for the greenhouses by means of a deterministic frontier production function analysis. A final study on the relationships between efficiency and some variables related to greenhouse management, educational and training levels of the farmers, marketing ability, etc. identifies strategies that allow to increase efficiency in horticultural production in the area.
