The authors propose the design of a fault-tolerant microprocessor module intended to operate in a cooperative multiprocessor architecture with a set of shared resources. The survival strategies of the operating system functions in the presence of faults is analyzed. Two features characterize these modules: (1) the absence of hierarchy (a priori) at software or hardware levels; a system of interconnected modules elects a dynamic coordinator in term of the state of each module; and (2) its operating system is designed for a total connectivity topology among modules; any other connectivity state is interpreted as a degraded case of the former. Fault-tolerance is basically implemented by software in each module. However, local memory can be configured in a triple-modular-redundancy structure in order to increase reliability.
