About

José Luis Gómez Tornero

José Luis Gómez Tornero was born in Murcia, Spain, in 1977. He received the Telecommunications Engineer degree from the Polytechnic University of Valencia (UPV), Valencia, Spain, in 2001, and the "laurea cum laude" Ph.D degree in Telecommunication Engineering from the Technical University of Cartagena (UPCT), Cartagena, Spain, in 2005.

In 1999 he joined the Radio Communications Department, UPV, as a research student, where he was involved in the development of analytical and numerical tools for the automated design of microwave filters in waveguide technology for space applications. In 2000, he joined the Radio Frequency Division, Industry Alcatel Espacio, Madrid, Spain, where he was involved with the development of microwave active circuits for telemetry, tracking and control (TTC) transponders, working for international space agencies such as NASA, ESA, CNES and JAXA, and also for private satellite providers / operators such as Hispasat and Eutelsat.

In 2001, he joined the Technical University of Cartagena (UPCT), Spain, as an Assistant Professor at the School of Telecommunication Engineering. From October 2005 to February 2009, he held de position of Vice Dean for Students and Lectures affairs in the Telecommunication Engineering Faculty at the UPCT. Since 2008, he has been an Associate Professor at the Department of Communication and Information Technologies, UPCT. Since December 2018 he holds a Full Professor position información Electromagnetics and Microwave Engineering st UPCT.

Since 2017, he also works for the Spanish State Agency for Research (AEI) as a coordinator for the Evaluation and Tracing of National projects in the field of Telecommunication Engineering.

His current research interests include:
1- The development of numerical methods for the analysis and design of leaky-wave devices in planar and waveguide technologies,
2- Their application for wireless telecoms, satellite-on-the-move, RFID + radio localization, microwave heating/sensing, wireless power transmission/harvesting, hyperthermia for cancer treatment, bio-electrodynamics and nano-bio-sensors, photo-electronics, and instantaneous ultrawideband analog signal processing.
3- The innovation in the area of higher-education teaching/learning, and the improvement of outreach and dissemination activities to increase the impact in general society, and more particularly engage younger students to STEM and increase the participation of girls and women in Engineering studies and deeper impact on societies development and coexistence.

He has authored or co-authored over 70 peer-reviewed journal papers (h-index: 23, source Google Scholar), more than 150 conference paper, and he has supervised 3 PhD. thesis and more than 50 MSc. thesis. He has been visiting researcher/professor at University of Loughborough (UK, England), Heriot-Watt University (UK, Scotland), Queen's University of Belfast (UK, Northern Ireland), CSIRO-ICT Centre (Sydney, Australia), University of Rennes (France), and KTH Stockholm (Sweden). You can find updated open-access versions of his research work in Research Gate.

José Luis Gómez Tornero received in July 2004 the national award from the foundation EPSON-Ibérica to the best Ph.D project in the field of Technology of Information and Communications (TIC). In June 2006, Dr. Gómez-Tornero's thesis (see summary report) received the Vodafone foundation-COIT/AEIT (Colegio Oficial de Ingenieros de Telecomunicación) award to the best Spanish Ph.D. thesis in the area of Advanced Mobile Communications Technologies. This thesis was also awarded in December 2006 as the best thesis in the area of Electrical Engineering, by the Technical University of Cartagena. In February 2010, Dr. Gómez Tornero was appointed CSIRO Distinguished Visiting Scientist by the CSIRO ICT Centre, Sydney. He is the co-recipient of one of the 2010 IEEE Engineering Education best papers conference award, the 2011 EuCAP best student paper prize, the 2012 EuCAP best antenna theory paper prize, finalist at the APS2013 best student paper prize and the EuCAP 2014 best paper award finalist, 2012 and 2013 URSI Spanish best student paper prizes, and 2018 IWAT Best Poster Award. The various thesis he has supervised have been awarded by the HISPASAT foundation to the best Spanish Ph.D. thesis in the area of "New Applications for Satellite Communications" (May 2014), and in October 2015, by the HISDESAT foundation award to the best Spanish Ph.D. thesis in the area of "Satellite Services", and various international and national recognitions.

José Luis has also received numerous national and international teaching awards, he is committed to outreach and engaging students into STEM areas, and he has received highest feedback from his undergraduate and postgraduate students. As a proof, this graph shows the grade point average he has received since he started teaching at UPCT, in the questionare carried out by the Teaching Quality Department at UPCT, to measure the degree of satisfaction of the students with his teaching duties.

Apart from his lecturing duties in the Technical School of Telecommunication at UPCT, Spain (teaching syllabus such as basic electronics, electromagnetic waves, antenna and microwave engineering), Prof. Gómez-Tornero serves as lecturer in international courses. He has participated in the "International Summer School on Wireless Power Transmission for Space Applications" (Aveiro, Portugal, June 2014), "International Spring School on Electromagnetics and emerging technologies for pervasive applications: Internet of Things, Health and Safety", Bologna, Italy (April 2016), the European School of Antennas "Leaky Waves and Periodic Structures for Antenna Applications", Rome, Italy, (April 2017), the "5G-AuRa Innovative Training Network (ITN)" in the framework of the Marie Sklodowska-Curie Actions, Paris, France (September 2017), the European Microwave Association short courses, Madrid, Spain (September 2018), and the International School of Antennas in Fez, Morocco (December 2018). He has also served as co-chair of Students Activities Committee in the European Microwave Week 2018, Madrid, Spain (September 2018).

Dr. Gómez Tornero is Senior Member of IEEE (USA), and he was appointed CSIRO Distinguished Visiting Scientist by the CSIRO ICT Centre at Sydney (Australia).

José Luis loves learning and teaching electromagnetic waves, high-frequecy circuits and antennas; and their technological, social, group, and human applications. In his little free time he enjoys surfing the waves of the ocean, and listening to psychodelic-style and social-committed type-of-music, and also Opera. He has three lovely restless kids: Mar, Héctor and Ariel.

He has the deep belief that life as a whole is a sudden self-healing wave of love and ever-lasting chances to help each other, and that we are all part of God and God is all part of us, creating with every single one of its existing breaths and pulses our conscious existence itself. And we provide God joyful experiences with our instantaneous lapse life and experience, which are God experiences' themselves.

Definitely, bearing life together with natural and spiritual laws is the most difficult task in our present lifes. This is the art of walking with the bare-feet well posed over the dirty ground, while connected to eternity with our souls. This can only be done with the help of our hearts, which can be well synchronized with our brotherhood, simply by connecting to Mother Nature and our living-brothers by love. Somehow life might be a simulation or a lie, as you prefer, but you can always choose the red pill and open your eyes.
